Support the fight to beat lung cancer!
Hello Family and Friends!
This is my third year fundraising for the A Breath of Hope Twin Cities Lung Run/Walk being held at Lake Harriett in Minneapolis on Saturday, August 11, 2017.
I was diagnosed with Stage IV lung cancer in March 2014. Luckily I had an ALK mutation which allowed me to be treated with an oral chemotherapy that worked well for 4 years. Unfortunately, my cancer began growing again this winter. Therefore, I have moved to the second line of treatment which is also an oral targeted therapy called Alectinib. At my first PET scan after beginning the new medication, there is a reduction in some of my tumors. This is such encouraging and hopeful news! These little pills that I take twice a day are not only extending my life, but giving me a great quality of life, minus a few annoying side effects. All of this was made possible by groundbreaking research funded by events such as the ABOHLF Lung Cancer Run/Walk.
Here are some surprising facts...Did you know that lung cancer has only a 17% survival rate? Did you know that more than 160,000 Americans will die of lung cancer this year and half are nonsmokers when diagnosed (some with little to no symptoms)? Did you know that lung cancer is the deadliest cancer claiming more lives than breast, colon, and prostate cancer COMBINED? After all these facts, did you know that lung cancer research still remains dramatically underfunded compared to other cancer research?
The A Breath of Hope Twin Cities Lung Run/Walk originated in 2007 after a group of lung cancer patients, their family members and their nurse experienced the lack of awareness, resources and support for this devastating disease. They realized that without action, the survival rate would not improve. A Breath of Hope Lung Foundation (ABOHLF) was established as a 501(c)(3) in 2008 to fight lung cancer through awareness, patient and family support, and innovative lung cancer research.
Please join in supporting my fight on Saturday, August 11, and walk or run the 5K/10K. I will be volunteering at the survivor tent and helping with the survivor's bus tour which precedes the walkers. Please stop by and say "Hi". If you are not able to attend the event, will you consider a donation to support my efforts to beat this unfair and misunderstood disease? If so, click the black bar that says DONATE NOW. Donations will be accepted for at least a week after the event. I realize everyone has very imprtant charities that you support and certainly understand if you are not able to donate at this time, but please consider other ways to help out in the future such as:
--Purchase a ticket to the Minnesota Twins Cancer Awareness Night on 8/14 benefiting ALL cancers. If you go through the ABOHLF website, you can pick the hat symbolizing the type of cancer you are supporting. Funds raised that evening will benefit various cancer organizations.
--Support A Breath of Hope Lung Foundation in one of their future events such as the Shining Light Gala or Finding Hope Together Lung Cancer Patient Summit in November, the lung run/walk in Ft. Meyers FL in February, the annual Women's Wellness Tea in March, and the annual golf tournament in June.
--Volunteer your time and talents at a cancer fund raising event.
--Pray for the doctors and researchers who are working diligently to create life saving and life extending drugs. Pray for those attending the Lake Harriett race for the first time who have been personally touched by or lost loved ones to lung cancer this year. Pray for a cure for this deadly disease.
"Thank you" to those who donated or walked in my honor in past years. Last year my cousin, Julie, took first place in her age division at the Lake Harriet 5K and my brother, Steve, took second place in his age division at the Duluth 5K. You guys rock!
